The link between mathematics and the natural world has been investigated since the time of the Ancient Greeks – relationships such as the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence are everywhere if you’ve got the right kind of brain to be able to see them – but it’s rarely as clearly demonstrated than in the work of Kai and Sunny. The London-based art duo’s work reduces natural forms to geometric patterns, but far from sterilising their subjects through abstraction, the pair seem to enhance the sense of motion and emotion.
Lots of Bits of Star is Kai and Sunny’s latest series which continues their adventures in stylised imagery, and includes their collaboration with street art icon Shepard Fairey. The work highlights the often contradictory qualities found in nature, depicting brutality and peacefulness, fragility and power, vulnerability and fearlessness. The pair’s screenprints, blurring the line between art and design, are delivered on wood, copper and paper. The creative process begins with hand-drawn sketches, which are then developed through manual and digital stages before being finished using ink embellished with mineral powders to attain the distinctive texture and sheen. Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York is hosting Lots of Bits of Star until 20 December.

On November 22nd, London artists Kai and Sunny celebrated the opening of “Lots of Bits of Star” at Jonathan Levine Gallery (previewed here). A simple theme ornately executed, their exhibition takes an up close and personal look at the dramatic life stars. As if looking through the lens of a super-telescope, the duo have created inspired images that take the shape of familiar motifs; wild, flowering petals, a flock of birds, to surreal geometric patterns. A certain twinkle is added to the pieces with texture, sheen and materials like mineral powders. Stars twinkle because of turbulence in the atmosphere of the Earth- but Kai and Sunny turn this into something delicate and almost peaceful. Take a look at photos from opening night below, courtesy of Kai and Sunny. “Lots of Bits of Stars” by Kai and Sunny is on view at Jonathan LeVine Gallery through December 20th.
Thanks to Hi-Fructose Magazine for covering the opening night. Thanks for the great review Caro!

Solo Exhibition - Lots of Bits of Star
529 West 20th Street, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10011
22nd November - 20th December 2014
NEW YORK, NY (November 5, 2014) — Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present Lots of Bits of Star, a series of new works by the London-based artist duo Kai & Sunny in what will be their first solo exhibition in New York. In conjunction with the exhibition, the artists will release a new print edition and an exclusive box set edition, both available for purchase at the opening reception.
Primarily inspired by nature, works by Kai & Sunny depict stylized imagery of flora and fauna. By reducing natural forms to geometric patterns, the artists’ collaborative work blurs the gap between fine art and design. Their process begins with hand-drawn sketches that undergo various stages, including digital, before the final result: hand-finished and pulled monochromatic screen prints on wood, copper and paper. Before printing, the artists infuse their inks with mineral powders, to achieve a distinct texture and sheen.
The works in Lots of Bits of Star revolve around contradicting perceptions of the natural world, balancing the serene with the fierce, the fragile with the stable and the vulnerable with the assertive. Seemingly innocent natural subjects are layered with dark undertones, hinting at the subversion that occurs in the wild and beyond. As Kai states, “Sunny and I use nature in our work to connect with people, to provoke thoughts and memories. We like the idea of showing something you can’t actually see and asking bigger questions.”
Lots of Bits of Star will also include carvings, letterpress prints and ink works on paper, as well as an original collaboration with Shepard Fairey. Additionally, an exclusive poem was written by Alex Maas, a member of the psychedelic rock band, The Black Angels, as a direct response to the works in the exhibition. Maas and friend, Toydrum, have also created a musical composition exclusively for the exhibition, which explores how music and the written word impact Kai & Sunny’s work. A limited number of CDs with download codes will be available to guests attending the opening reception. Follow the link for a free download: www.kaiandsunny.com
Opening reception attended by Os Gemeos, Bil Blast, Doze Green, Tomo kazumatsuyama, Rostarr, D*face and Taku Obata

We are showing Kai & Sunny this weekend at Subliminal projects and their work is amazing.
I was fortunate enough to do a print collaboration with them and it turned out very beautifully. There are two color ways in the screen print edition: black and silver, and black and light gold. The metallic is more luminous than most and has to be seen in person. The print is on premium rag paper with deckled edges and there is an embossed Kai & Sunny logo in the lower right. The prints are signed and numbered by Kai & Sunny and me. The whole Kai & Sunny "Caught By The Nest" show is gorgeous and has to be seen in person. I hope to see you Saturday!
A limited quantity of both editions will available at the Opening Reception for In-person purchases ONLY. OBEY GIANT will be releasing the full editions online on September 12th, 2013 at a Random Time. Each print is $125 and will be limited to 1 print per person/per household. Thanks to Creative Review for the article on our book covers in this months issue - page 48.
Thanks to David Mitchell for his contribution and his comments. Please see article below.
These days, the designer's relationship with the author is usually more distanced; the work produced is often the result of an art director's brief, or direct engagement with the text, rather than the writer. In 2004 designers Kai & Sunny were commissioned by Alasdair Oliver at Hodder to design and illustrate the cover of David Mitchell's novel, Cloud Atlas. The idea, says Kai Clements, was to create a cover that "attempts to circle the globe and reaches from the 19th century to the future". No mean feat. But Mitchell recalls "inwardly glowing with unearned gratification at how a single design could somehow evoke Victoriana, 70's prog-rock and a post-apocalyptic future. That was the moment when I understood that brilliant designers don't merely make artwork like the rest of us, only to a more-practised and higher level," he says, " rather, brilliant designers are brilliant because their brains are wired differently."
According to Mitchell, Kai & Sunny's approach (carried to a further three of his books) was to evoke the "structure of a text on which the content is hung", rather than picking up on an element of the plot, or referencing a character or motif from the story. " A competent but average designer might read a novel called Chekhov's Cat, notice there's a lot of cats in it, and knock up a decent cover with a cat looking inscrutable," says Mitchell. But in reflecting the "symmetry" of Cloud Atlas; and the "interconnected narratives" within Ghostwritten in a single image, Kai & Sunny could then unite the books by employing a similar aesthetic and approach to decorative typography across all three. A more straight forward symbolic approach was used for Mitchell's Black Swan Green - the heads of wheat echoing the cycle of life that animates the story.

The Gardener by David Mitchell. Listen to Chris Moran reading the story, over images from the Flower Show. The Booker-shortlisted author has written an exclusive short story, The Gardener, to accompany the artists' silkscreen images of flowers. Show runs: 3rd June - 26th June
The new show features a series of monotone works, highlighted in glittering silver, which explore the word 'flower'. These include large-scale, silkscreened images which illustrate the complexity of the flower. This latest work demonstrates Kai and Sunny's continuing intricacy and connection with nature but also shows a developing maturity and intensity.

The work of Kai and Sunny appears in many arenas of art. They have won numerous accolades including a D&AD award in illustration/design. Their intricate, natural and sometimes sinister design style has earned them commissions for David Mitchell book covers, art direction for Alexander McQueen and advertising campaigns for global brands including Adobe and Apple.
Their new exhibition, 'The Flower Show', follows the success of previous sell-out solo shows: 'What A Wonderful World' (2009) and 'Return To The Wild' (2010) at the Stolen Space Gallery, London, and their continued collaboration with Daydreaming with... James Lavelle at Haunch of Venison, London (2010).
